In the Language class with our teacher Andrea Schejter, we were asked to write short stories for the school's writing competition. We were given the following instructions:
Choose one of the following subjects to write about.
Write a story which contains this:
- “I will never forget that day”
- How did he dare to do that to me
- We should be more concerned about the dangers of social networking.
The Flight
I remember waking up extremely early that morning, around five or six o’clock. My anxiety didn't let me sleep at night. After waiting almost my whole life for it, finally it was happening.
At 4pm I had to take a plane which was going to Sydney. I’d always dreamt to travel to Australia. Therefore, for my 18th birthday, my parents decided to give it to me as a present.
By midday I was already set, documents, passport, luggage. All my family decided to go to the airport to say goodbye to me, which I thought was a really nice gesture. I was grateful.
In a single second what seemed to be the best day ever took a twist. Three words. ‘You are late.’ ‘Late?’ I said. ‘But I arrived three hours ago!’. Big surprise I received when the lady in the check-in cabin proved me wrong. In fact, the flight had departed at 4am, not 4pm.
I didn’t know what to do. Could I really be that dumb? How would I say to my family that I wasted all their money? Those thoughts killed me at that moment.
When my parents discovered my error they simply laughed at me. Everyone laughed at me. I will never forget that day. No one lets me forget it. Four years have gone by and that little mistake made me a fool for the rest of my life.
